As part of the second International Day of Birmingham, Mockingbird Cinema is proud to host a one-night-only tribute to one of television’s most iconic shows, Thunderbirds.
To mark the 60th anniversary of Gerry Anderson’s groundbreaking series, audiences will enjoy two newly restored 4K episodes on the big screen: Trapped in the Sky and Terror in New York City. These timeless classics have been lovingly restored to look and sound better than ever.
Thunderbirds also has a special connection to Birmingham. Parker, Lady Penelope’s famous chauffeur, was sculpted by local artist John Blundall, and many of the show’s original sound effects were recorded in Handsworth. What became a global TV phenomenon was, in many ways, rooted right here in the city.
The evening will open with an introduction from local creative legend Trevor Beattie, before the screenings begin. After the episodes, Birmingham’s own Marc Silk, the internationally renowned voice actor known for Thunderbirds, Star Wars, and Scooby-Doo, will join audiences for a Q&A celebrating the show’s enduring legacy and its Brummie heritage.
On the night, there will also be a raffle with two prizes supplied by Anderson Entertainment, giving fans the chance to take home a unique piece of Thunderbirds history.
This event forms part of the International Day of Birmingham on Wednesday 24 September 2025, a city-wide celebration of culture, creativity and community. Venues across the city centre and Digbeth will be hosting exhibitions, performances, markets and live moments. The festival is run as a not-for-profit Community Interest Company, with all proceeds reinvested into future events and projects.
Thunderbirds at the Mockingbird isn’t just a screening, it’s celebrating Birmingham’s place in global pop culture. FAB indeed.
