It's a rare thing for a debut feature to be so assured, but self-taught British writer-director Jack King has delivered right out of the gate.
Having honed his skills making music videos and short films that frequently appeared among Vimeo Staff Picks, Kings leap into feature films is utterly impressive.
Deserved winner of the Sean Connery Prize for Feature Filmmaking Excellence at last years Edinburgh International Film Festival, The Ceremony follows two migrant car wash workers, Cristi and Yusuf, who are forced to dispose of the body of a deceased asylum seeker in the Yorkshire Dales. The film blends crime story, road movie, and surrealist drama, exploring themes of grief, morality, and the modern migrant experience with sensitivity and craftsmanship. Oh, and the cinematography - shot in black and white, the dales have never looked more stark and beautiful.
This is sublime filmmaking in every sense. Were delighted to host both director Jack King and producer Hollie Bryan for a Q&A after the film.
This screening is part of Flatpack's monthly residency at The Mockingbird. Expect all manner of films previews, rediscovered gems, and under-the-radar curiosities you won't find anywhere else.
