Whatever Pays the Rent presents AN OFFER YOU CAN’T REFUSE. A double bill dedicated to the original Hollywood hunk, Al Pacino, in two stand out films, both on the edge of queer cinema, directed by Sidney Lumet (12 Angry Men, Network) and William Friedkin (The Exorcist, Sorcerer).
Dog Day Afternoon (1975) is a crime drama based on the true story of Sonny - a young man who attempts to rob a bank in order to pay for his girlfriend’s transition. The film takes place over a day as the robbery turns into a hostage situation met by a huge crowd forming outside the bank made up of police and pedestrians.
Featuring a touching performance by Al Pacino, you’ll find yourself rooting for both the robbers and the hostages whilst sitting on the edge of your seat knowing this can’t end well. Dog Day Afternoon was a HUGE success and nominated for 7 Golden Globes, 6 BAFTAs and 6 Oscars where it won Best Original Screenplay.
Cruising (1980) is a crime thriller about a police man who goes undercover in the 1970s leather scene to find the serial killer targeting gay men. Taking place in the underworld of S&M night clubs, “Al Pacino is cruising for a killer”.
Controversial with gay and straight audiences at the time of its release, many consider the film to be a masterpiece, cited by the Safdie Brothers to be a huge influence on their work. This is a Hollywood exploration of a New York City sub-culture, beautifully shot with a punk soundtrack, that’ll stay with you as you try and decipher just what the filmmakers were getting at.
