CONCRETE PRESENTS: CRASH
Concrete Mag presents Crash (1996), David Cronenberg's sexy sleek 90s movie about wanting to bang in several ways.
After surviving a car crash, film producer James Ballard (James Spader) becomes involved with a group of symphorophiliacs - people aroused and stimulated by car crashes - exploring a new world of sex, kink, and danger.
Adapted from the novel of the same name by J.G. Ballard, 'Crash' explores the stimulating potentials of car crashes from the perspective of a world transformed by car culture. When everyone drives, when there's no escape, so what happens when we try to rationalise the car crash, and find some form of intimacy within?
This screening will be preceded by a short introduction about Crash Culture, and the legacy of Herbert Manzoni, City Surveyor in Birmingham from 1935 to 1963, noted for his apathy towards Birmingham's old architecture, and his planned construction of the inner ring road - what would later be coined Birmingham's Concrete Collar
This screening is part of Crash Culture, a series of screenings by Birmingham-based culture magazine Concrete Mag, exploring Birmingham's dependence on driving through cinema. Through considering how crashes have been depicted on-screen through the ages, Concrete Mag aim to provoke questions of transport safety, ways to change culture, and structural solutions.
